An Early Opening in 2012
with a new exhibition celebrating achievements
of four Maritime Women
Rev. Dr. Gloria Ann Holmes
Dr. Gloria Ann Holmes, a U.S. Navy Commander, exacting model shipwright, and esteemed academic achiever, joined the United States Navy intent on becoming the first women to command a ship of the fleet.

Mary Graves
She was among the first of women who sailed the seas with their captain husbands in the mid-19th century. Her ten years of experience and courage under severe duress saved their lives, those of its crew and the ship full of valuable cargo.

Alice Brown
Daughter of renowned Newburyport sea captain Lawrence Brown, Alice sailed with her father on distant voyages to the Orient. At a very young age this highly artistic woman took full advantage of her amazing worldly exposure.

Elizabeth Bray
From two voyages aboard Volant, she conveys rare and touching insight to 19th century life at sea through 140 handwritten journal pages.
Saturdays and Sundays from March 10th through April 1st.

Our mission is to protect, preserve and interpret the maritime heritage of the lower Merrimack Valley region and how it relates to American history.
