An Historic Occasion -- The Maritime Adventure Walking Tour debut

June 4, 2010

Thanks to the generosity of the Edmund and Ruth Burke Educational Foundation and the Kennard C.  Bowlen Charitable Trust, the Custom House Maritime Museum's Education Committee -- with assistance from a very special pair of teachers from Newburyport's Bresnahan Elementary School, Eileen Whitney and Joan Notargiacomo -- has created an exciting, spirited and memorable educational event.

Special thanks to the Newburyport Education – Business Coalition for funding the transportation for students to and from the Museum through a Partnership/Teacher grant.

On Friday, June 4th, the Maritime Adventure Walking Tour was launched for the benefit of over 40 of Newburyport's  third grade students from the Bresnahan Elementary School.  The project is designed to provide students a first-hand tactile exposure to the rich and wonderful maritime history surrounding them in Newburyport, Massachusetts.

We trust that this will be a most memorable experience.  Just ask the any student who participated for all the details!

Here are some images to help them recall...

The Maritime Adventure begins at the front doors of the museum...

Then ascends to the Moseley Gallery Hall of Ships...

For a discussion on the reason for Half Hulls...

And Newburyport's storied tradition of shipbuilding...

Then to a presentation by Coast Guardsmen in the USCG room...

And to revelations of First Wharf, fathoms and a cable's length...

Then on to a lighthouse...

And the purpose served prior to that as an intriguing location for a memorable dinner...

Followed by nearly two hours of adventure and discoveries galore through exploration of  the Coast Guard Station and in pursuit of the many historical secrets of Federal Street, High Street, the Bartlett Mall, State Street, Fish Street and Inn Street...

Not to mention Market Square and the Great Fire of 1811...

As well as the very site of the very first American Tea Party...

And of course, Waterfront Park...

To ring the ship's bell...

Salute our friends from the Coast Guard on patrol...

And re-enact the FIRST American Tea Party...

While declaring "No taxation without....???"

And what facinating tour could ever be complete without a momentous souvenir?
