Read Chapter 1 of Elizabeth Bray's Journal

On September 25th, 1854, at the age of 39, Elizabeth Bray departed Newburyport on the journey that would take her clear across the globe -- a journey she had sought all her life growing up in Newburyport, and now for the first time had the opportunity.

A mother of three, she would leave care of her two older sons attending Newburyport schools, with family members, and take her five years old daughter, Fanny, along for this trip of a lifetime sailing with her husband, Captain Stephen Bray, on his merchant ship, Volant.

One Woman's WorldThe events and details of her journey are known through the personal journal she kept, comprising over 140 pages of her meticulously handwritten entries.  Over the past year, the Custom House Maritime Museum has been engaged in the process of researching and transcribing Elizabeth's journal in preparation of its publishing.  The intimate story of life aboard a mid-nineteenth century American merchant ship sailing the world as seen through the eyes of this adventurous Newburport woman provides a unique portal to history.

In celebration of Woman's History Month and the opening of the museum's newest exhibition, One Woman's World, based upon Elizabeth's adventure, we proudly present you with the first chapter of her amazing story, and invite you to download, enjoy and share it with friends.

We invite you as well to follow the progress of Elizabeth's journey as our reseach and transcription of her journal continues -- through postings you will find on the Elizabeth Bray Joural blog at
