2011 Holiday House Tour

NEWBURYPORT, MA (Nov. 21, 2011)  The 18th Annual Holiday House Tour to be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, provides area residents the opportunity to visit 11 of the finest local private homes decorated in holiday fashion.  Sponsored once again by Stone Ridge Properties to benefit the Custom House Maritime Museum, the tour will highlight homes representing four centuries of the Newburyport area’s history, culture and lifestyle.

Venues range from in-town to rural countryside to spectacular water settings, with ages ranging from an 18th Century restored Colonial to a meticulously appointed 21st Century contemporary designer townhouse.  One exquisite focus will be an historic neighborhood just across the River Merrimack, on Robert Ring’s Island.

Student musical ensembles from local high schools will perform at some of the homes featured in the tour. Coffee and chowder, complements of Soufflés and The Grog will be available upstairs at the Custom House Maritime Museum from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the day of the tour.  In addition, refreshments will be served at the Community House on Ring’s Island.

Also, tour participants will be able to bid on one-of-a-kind wreaths at the 2011 Silent Wreaths Auction at the museum beginning December 2 and continuing through December 10.  Winners will be announced at 6 p.m. on the day of the tour.

The Custom House Maritime Museum

ABOUT THE CUSTOM HOUSE MARITIME MUSEUM
The Custom House Maritime Museum is managed by the Newburyport Maritime Society, Inc., established in 1968 to protect, preserve and communicate the maritime heritage of the Merrimack Valley and its role in American History.  We are connecting the past to the living history of today through interaction and engagement with our unique collection of maritime art, model clipper ships, displays of famous shipwrecks, the history of the United States Coast Guard, and much more.  The Custom Houes building itself on Water Street in the heart of downtown Newburyport was designed by Robert Mills, architect of the Washington Monument and the U.S. Treasury Building and was built in 1835 to serve the growing overseas trade and to collect taxes on the imported goods in the waterfront.  The museum is open year round for events and activities and daily beginning May 17th from 10 am to 4 pm Tuesday through Saturday and from noon to 4 pm on Sunday and holiday Mondays.  Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for seniors and students.
Museum members, active military members and children under 6 are admitted free.  For more information, visit the museum website at www.thechmm.org, or call 978-462-8681, or email info@thechmm.org.
