The Wreck of the Pocahontas

The Pocahontas, built in Newbury in 1830, set sail for Newburyport in mid-September, 1839 from Cadiz, Spain. Due to an unexpected accident with a Spanish ship, she was forced to return to port and postpone her trip home. Little did Captain James G Cook know that this delay would cost all of them their lives.

Just two days before Christmas on December 23rd, 1839, the Pocahontas's fate was sealed as they attempted to ride out a horrible storm as they lay anchored off the coast of Plum Island. The storm dragged their ship up onto a reef, and despite repeated attempts at a rescue, the townspeople could do nothing but watch as the sailors frantically tried to save themselves. Don't miss this ALL NEW dramatic historical portrayal of the wreck of the Pocahontas as told by the townspeople of Newburyport.
