The Custom House Maritime Museum, 25 Water Street, Newburyport, MA, will kick off this year's Yankee Homecoming with a new exhibition, "Citizen Soldier", opening officially on Saturday July 28.

"The exhibition focuses specifically on items in our collection," says curator Kevin MacDonald. "It's an eclectic mix of uniforms, equipment, and souvenirs that help tell the stories of local-area men and women who served their country during the Second Great War, and returned as victorious citizens to their home towns."

The Coast Guard is well represented in many of the exhibits. "Because the Coast Guard was transferred from the Treasury Department to the Department of the Navy for the duration of the war, their service tends to hide in the Navy's shadow," MacDonald notes. "We've tried to rectify that in this exhibition."

Among the items displayed are channel maps and convoy frequencies used by Coast Guard Radioman Allen Aylward aboard his landing craft, LCI-326, during the Normandy landings in June 1944. Landing craft were frequently manned by all-Coast Guard crews, who were proficient in navigating coastal waters.

There is also a nod to those on the home front who did not serve in the military, but nevertheless made extraordinary efforts to support the war effort, from rationing food and fuel, to searching for enemy aircraft from their backyards.

"Citizen Soldier" runs through June 2019 at 25 Water Street.
