Prelude to a Revolution

Come enjoy a relaxing mid-day, mid-week tea at the historic Custom House Maritime Museum with splendid sandwiches, sumptuous sweets and richly brewed English tea, served along with soothing classical music and enriching cultural and historical insights.

Lieut. Col. Leslie's Retreat in Salem

For your historical enjoyment, we present the little known story of how the Revolutionary War nearly began in Salem, Massachusetts, seven weeks before the "Shot Heard Round the World" resonated through Lexington and Concord.

In an amazing encounter with some 240 fusiliers from the British 64th Regiment, sent by General Gage to seize a reported cache of weapons (the same mission on which British soldiers would also be sent to Lexington and Concord), an organized network of local militias created the first armed resistance by the colonies to British authority at the North Bridge in Salem.  With Gage having declared Massachusetts in "open rebellion" only two weeks earlier -- the north shore was a veritable tinder box waiting to ignite. However, American Colonel David Mason's keen negotiating skills and capable command during a deadlocked stand-off, prevented a potential bloodbath and delivered the British their first setback in the struggle for American Independence.
