Mike Welch performs Christmastide pieces from the Age of Sail

Live Music with Michael Welch at 6:00, 7:00 & 8:00 pm

Join versatile re-enactor and musician Michael Welch for a truly unique performance of period Christmastide pieces played on lute, concertina and harpsichord, replicating the traditions and music from Newburyport’s colonial past.

Embrace and enjoy a measure of genuine sounds and songs as sung in the parlors of Newburyport homes -- and most certainly aboard its ships during the Age of Sail.

Live Historic Performances at 6:30, 7:30 and 8:30 pm

The ship Sonora, built by John Currier, Jr., had already amassed a decade of faithful merchant service as she set sail from Hong Kong on November 26, 1863.  Under the command of Captain Lawrence C. Brown and carrying a full cargo of rice, she was destined for Akyab, British India.  But America’s far reaching Civil War strife would engulf Sonora as she lay anchored in the straits of Malacca, on the day after Christmas. Don't miss this all new dramatic historic portrayal of the capture of the ship Sonora by the Confederate Raider Alabama and her infamous Captain Raphael Semmes.
