March First Friday Social - Elizabeth Bray's Voyage of Discovery
The Story of a Lifetime
BY ELIZABETH BRAY
Members of the Custom House Maritime Museum and their guests are cordially invited to our First Friday Social on March 1st from 6:00-8:00pm.
This month's program profiles an amazing Newburyport woman whose story is nearly 160 years old yet as fresh and invigorating as the ocean air she breathed. It is the story of a lifetime for Newburyport native Elizabeth Bray, mother of three and wife to Captain Stephen Bray. Her long sought adventure to sail across the seas, intimately told through more than 140 pages of her handwritten journal, is the subject of our upcoming Woman's History Month exhibition, One Woman's World, which runs from March 9 through April 28.
Providing a preview of this compelling narrative will be our Exhibition Curators, Michelle Hastings and Katherine Gilbert, who will both share first-hand experiences on how this exhibition emerged as a concept and became reality, including transcription and research now underway to publish the Elizabeth Bray's Journal.
Come hear the story behind the story of Elizabeth's Journey of discovery, soon to be showcased in an important new and original exhibition anchoring our 2013 spring schedule, and featuring exciting, rarely-if-ever-seen artifacts from the museum's collection.
We encourage all members to invite a guest to this event to introduce them to the Custom House Maritime Museum and treat them to an evening of conversation, company and maritime discovery in the heart of downtown Newburyport.
For your refreshment, wine, beer and soft drinks will be served -- while Sheila Mullins entertains us with the cuisine of South America's largest country --BRAZIL-- as part of her sumptuous and continuing Spice Trade Culinary Adventure!
We proudly feature the great and distinctive beers of Harpoon Brewery, the official beer of the Custom House Maritime Museum.
