Robert Mills and his 175-year-old Newburyport Masterpiece

An expedition led by Gregory Colling, AIARobert Mills, Amerca's First Architect
August 8, 2010 at 4:00pm

The distinction of America’s first architect is often attributed to Robert Mills, whose consummate Custom House is home to our museum as well as the literal and symbolic doorway to our maritime heritage.  Don’t miss this outstanding opportunity to discover new meaning in Mills’ familiar granite edifice, revisit the pivotal role it served in young America’s bustling economy – and appreciate in full, this architectural gem.

Gregory Colling, AIA

We welcome Greg Colling, AIA, principal of Merrimack Design Associates, member of the Institute of Classical Architecture, board member and treasurer of the Newburyport Preservation Trust, an accomplished instructor and lecturer on historic American architecture, who will provide an architect’s perspective of the unique elements, endearing attributes and signature features of Robert Mills’ Custom House.

Join us for what promises to be an insightful tribute during the 175th Anniversary of this magnificent civic structure, so profoundly woven into Newburyport’s identity as to be considered the mooring to her soul.

FYI: Robert Mills is well know for his acoustical design work. Prior to this event, at 2:00pm, the CHMM hosts the Newburyport Chamber Music Festival introduction program including a musical sneak preview. This affords the rare opportunity to experience a live demonstration of the outstanding acoustics of the Custom House.
