Documenting Historic Structures

Newburyport Preservation Trust presents the third in its series of instructive preservation sessions:

Documenting Historic Structures

How the Pros Did It in the Historic American Buildings Survey

This illustrated talk features digitally-projected images of detailed measured drawings and photos from the nationwide Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) in the 1930s, describes how surveys were accomplished, and explains how the documentation standards shaped a new professional specialty known today as preservation architecture.

Program content also includes the late-19th-century motivations for historic house preservation; the early-20th-century redirection from "monument-making" to more objective study; the 1930s standardization of the federal HABS program; and the unanticipated results of preservation's tight focus on architecture.

Presenter R.W. Bacon is the author of "The HABS and the HABs NOTs: Documenting the Architecture of Newburyport in the Historic American Buildings Survey," which received the 2017 Book Award for Informational Nonfiction from Independent Publishers of New England.

The Newburyport Preservation Trust in collaboration with the Custom House Maritime Museum are making this presentation Free and open to the public.  Join us on Thursday, March 15, 2018 at 6:00 pm, for this third in a series of enlightening preservation sessions.
