Time vs Art

Restoring the Toll of Centuries

Members of the Custom House Maritime Museum and their guests are cordially invited to our First Friday Social on April 6th, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 pm, for a case study on conserving historic works of painted art.  As time marches on, in its shadow follows the unrelenting yet patently invisible process of gradual and inevitable deterioration.

The subject of our program involves one of the oldest oil-on-canvas paintings in the museum's collection; a cherished portrait of Newburyport’s renowned Revolutionary War Privateer Capt. Moses Brown. It was painted by Flemish artist Charles Delin, circa 1800, most likely while Captain Brown was in the port city of Antwerp, in command of the U.S. Navy Sloop-of-War Merrimack, during the Quasi-war with France.

We welcome Conservator Jeremy Fogg of Anthony Moore Painting Conservation, in York, Maine, who will explain the conservation process that began last November, in assessing, prescribing and executing the appropriate treatment options through which this gracious, fragile and aging portrait of a genuine American maritime hero was brilliantly restored.

Mr. Fogg and Anthony Moore Painting Conservation have worked closely with the museum in ongoing conservation and restorative care of its painting collection since the summer of 2013, with this Nicholas Joseph Delin painting the fourth project they have completed.  We are greatly indebted to the generosity of the Jeanette Isabella Conservation Fund for underwriting the preservation of this prized work.
