Newburyport's Bartlet Mall

Three Centuries of Common Groun

THIS EVENT RESCHEDULED TO FRIDAY, JANUARY 12, 2018

Members of the Custom House Maritime Museum and their guests are cordially invited to our First First Friday Social of the New Year, now rescheduled to January 12th, 2018, from 6:00-8:00 pm, when we will explore the evolution of Newburyport's most common ground -- the Bartlet Mall.

This ancient common at Newberry Plantation, which today we know as the Bartlet Mall, has been both the literal and figurative heart of Newburyport for over 300 years. Throughout its long history, the "Mell" has not only been home to everything from a windmill to an armory, and from schoolhouses to a courthouse -- it has for all practical purposes from its commanding position as an open space gateway to the downtown -- likely been the most shared experience of everyone who has ever lived here.

CHMM Curator, Kevin MacDonald

Join us in welcoming museum curator, Kevin MacDonald whose earnest research traces the history of this strategically located common through the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries for a fascinating narrative of new, familiar and even surprising detail.

From its role as ancient common to the Bartlet Mall we know today -- see how the influential legacy of formulative American landscape architect Charles Eliot who conceived the original vision in which simplicity of design and carefully calculated plantings would characterized this gem of invaluable open space from the late nineteenth century forward.

We encourage all our members to bring a guest to this event to introduce them to the Custom House Maritime Museum and our casual evening of conversation, company and maritime discovery in the heart of downtown Newburyport.

For your refreshment, wine, beer and soft drinks will be served – along with thematic hors d’oeuvres from Sheila Mullins' extraordinary Spice Trade Culinary Adventure -- this month featuring a diverse cultural cuisine from South America's northeast coast -- the Republic of Surinam!

Newburyport Brewing - Official Beer of the Custom House Maritime Museum

Come and enjoy a variety of wines generously provided by New England Wine and Spirits -- along with fine craft beers from Newburyport Brewery -- the official beer of the Custom House Maritime Museum!v

Please, remember to bring your membership card with you!
