March First Friday Social - A Gift Unveiling
March First Friday Social
Unveiling a maritime gift commemorating the War of 1812
Museum members and their guests are cordially invited to our First Friday Social on March 6th from 6:00-8:00pm, at which we unveil a most generous gift at an historically opportune moment. While this past month delivered historic levels of snow, it brought as well a bicentennial moment, the ending of the War of 1812, our nation's first declared war. Some may justly say, the beginning of that end, but that's another story.
Friday we host the prolific contemporary artist Steven Lush, a full-blooded mariner and both creator and donor of the newest addition to our collection. He is a Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists, and member of the New England Watercolor Society, Rockport Art Association, Northshore Arts Association and the Coast Guard Art Program, as well as a Master Model Shipwright member of the USS Constitution Model Shipwright Guild. The gift Steve will unveil and explain is a painting depicting the first engagement of the United States Revenue Cutter Service in the War of 1812, an encounter occurring just days following President Madison's signing of the U.S. declaration of war.
His gift has just recently returned from Star Spangled Nation, a 15-month, five-venue War of 1812 themed maritime art exhibition produced by the American Society of Marine Artists. And while we'll save revelation of his gift's appearance for Friday evening, we'll tease you with samples of Mr. Lush's amazing repertoire and suggest a visit to his website.
We encourage all our members to invite a guest to this event to introduce them to the Custom House Maritime Museum and to an evening of conversation, company and maritime discovery in the heart of downtown Newburyport.
For your refreshment, wine, beer and soft drinks will be served -- along with thematic hors d'oeuvres from Sheila Mullins' extraordinary Spice Trade Culinary Adventure, this month serving cuisine from one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world -- Naples, Italy. Enjoy outstanding wines selected by our partners-in-wine Grand Trunk Old World Market -- along with fine craft beers from Harpoon Brewery.
We proudly feature the great and distinctive beers of Harpoon Brewery, the official beer of the Custom House Maritime Museum.
