April First Friday Social - Chasing History

Chasing History….

on the 38th Voyage of the Charles W. Morgan

The whaleboat was the tip of the spear in a once thriving industry.  Carried by whaleships as they roamed every corner of the globe, these 28’ open boats propelled by oar and sail were lowered to chase the whales when sighted. Though lightly built for speed and maneuverability, they were strong enough to absorb the abuse of the hunt.

Today, the Charles W. Morgan is the last of an American whaling fleet that numbered more than 2,700 vessels.  Launched in New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1841, the Morgan embarked on 37 voyages over the course of her 80-year whaling career.  Re-launched in 2013 following an extensive restoration in Mystic Seaport, she embarks in May on her 38th voyage, a voyage of history and education, and will be accompanied by the historically accurate Beetle design whaleboat handcrafted at Lowell’s Boat Shop.Lowell's Boat Shop Whaleboat Project

We invite all members of the Custom House Maritime Museum and their guests to our First Friday Social on April 4th from 6:00-8:00 pm to both see this masterful example of the art and craft of fine wooden boat building -- up close -- and hear the story of the Lowell's Boat Shop Whaleboat Project as told by those who participated in building it.Charles W Morgan at Mystic Seaport

We encourage all our members to invite a guest and introduce them to the Custom House Maritime Museum for a casual evening of conversation, company and maritime discovery in the heart of downtown Newburyport.

For your refreshment, wine, beer and soft drinks will be served – along with thematic hors d’oeuvres from Sheila Mullins' extraordinary Spice Trade Culinary Adventure -- this month featuring the cuisine of the Caribbean Commonwealth of Puerto Rico!
