November First Friday Social - The fine art of Maritime Navigation
The Fine Art of Maritime Navigation
Members of the Custom House Maritime Museum and their guests are cordially invited to our First Friday Social on November 1st from 6:00-8:00 pm featuring insights to our newest exhibition Plotting Their Course, The Fine Art of Maritime Navigation.
In 1772, a handful of Newburyport ship captains organized and established what would become a formidable and driving force -- the Marine Society of Newburyport. A principle reason was to effectively share their knowledge of the seas. Through a combination of rarely seen and recently acquired pieces of the museum's collection including charts, maps and instruments, this exhibition explores the tools, techniques and resulting artistry of navigating and mapping the high seas.
For our November First Friday Social we welcome Exhibition Curator, Alison Smith and Museum Curator, Kevin MacDonald, who will present an insider's perspective of the exhibition's content and elements, including the magnificent Atlantic Neptune portfolios gifted to the museum by Judy and Irwin Miller.
We encourage all our members to invite a guest and introduce them to the Custom House Maritime Museum for a casual evening of conversation, company and maritime discovery in the heart of downtown Newburyport.
For refreshments, wine, beer and soft drinks will be served – along with thematic hors d’oeuvres from Sheila Mullins' extraordinary Spice Trade Culinary Adventure. This month we visit the cuisine of the Persian Gulf port of Muscat, the capital of Oman!
Enjoy and sample a variety of great autum wines selected by our partners in wine, Grand Trunk Old World Market, along with fine craft beers from New England's own Harpoon Brewery. We proudly feature the great and distinctive beers of Harpoon Brewery, the official beer of the Custom House Maritime Museum.
