September First Friday Social -- 1850s Maritime Newburyport
A View of 1850's Newburyport from the Harbor
Members of the Custom House Maritime Museum and their guests are cordially invited to our First Friday Social on September 6th from 6:00-8:00pm, at which we host a pair of treasured native Newburyport artists.
Help us welcome TJ Walton back to Newburyport, visiting from her bustling Provincetown Gallery where she has lived and painted fulltime since 1989. TJ has a very personal and exciting maritime gift she will present to the Custom House Maritime Museum -- which you will not want to miss!
And in conjunction with our newest exhibition, Newburyport & Nineteenth, an exploration of the mid-century-modern makeover Newburyport experienced through embracing the technologies of the industrial age -- proudly sponsored by Institution For Savings -- we welcome noted landscape artist, City Clerk and Justice of the Peace, Newburyport's own Richard Burke Jones whose painting "View of 1850's Newburyport from Harbor" is a centerpiece of this new exhibit.
By the middle of the nineteenth century, Newburyport’s bustling commercial center was a maze of alleys and passageways, vibrant, vivid and diverse, as is so clearly depicted in Richard Jones' meticulously researched painting. We invite you to hear the artist's own narrative of how this glowing depiction of Newburyport's maritime heritage was painstakingly recreated over the course of several years. And welcome you to admire the magnificent Giclee print of "View of 1850's Newburyport from Harbor" now on display, gifted to the museum by members Elizabeth and William Harris.
We encourage all our members to invite a guest to this First Friday Social to introduce them to the Custom House Maritime Museum and to a casual evening of conversation, company and maritime discovery in the heart of downtown Newburyport.
For your refreshment, wine, beer and soft drinks will be served – along with thematic hors d’oeuvres from Sheila Mullins' extraordinary Spice Trade Culinary Adventure -- featuring the south Pacific Pitcairn Islands, home to descendants of the Bounty mutineers!
Enjoy wines selected by our partners in wine, Grand Trunk Old World Market, along with fine craft beers from New England's own Harpoon Brewery. We proudly feature the great and distinctive beers of Harpoon Brewery, the official beer of the Custom House Maritime Museum!
