Conflicting Stories

Native Vignettes of the Civil War

In conjunction with the Sesquicentennial Anniversary of American Civil War events of 1863, the Custom House Maritime Museum presents an exhibition exploring personal episodes of bravery, charity, courage and service involving those for whom Newburyport was home.William Lloyd Garrison

Regarded as the first modern war, the American Civil War consumed an outsized proportion of Newburyport citizens during its several years of conflict. Their stories are universal and unique, personal as well as impactful, illuminating yet at times confusing. Taken together they provide insight and perspective into a life-changing era, a conflict in which their participation in and contribution to the War Between the States determined the very future of the Union.Caleb Cushing
