June First Friday Social - Newburyport and the Civil War
Newburyport's Maritime Civil War Legacy
Museum members and their guests are cordially invited to our First Friday Social on June 7th from 6:00-8:00pm, and a special evening program providing authoritative insights to our newly launched spring exhibition Conflicting Stories - Native Vignettes of the Civil War.
We are honored to welcome Civil War authority, reenactor and author of the book Newburport and the Civil War, museum member William Hallett as our featured guest. Bill will focus on the "Port" in our city's name this evening, presenting its maritime contribution to the American Civil War, highlighting ships, crews and naval affairs pertaining to Newburyport during this period in our history.
Though the sights and sounds of famous Civil War battlefields were all-too-familiar an experience for many Newburyport's soldiers -- for her mariners, battlefields extended clear across the globe.
Bill Hallett will also be available to sign copies of his book, Newburyport and the Civil War -- which makes a fine Father's Day gift!
We encourage all our members to invite a guest to this event to introduce them to the Custom House Maritime Museum and treat them to an evening of conversation, company and maritime discovery in the heart of downtown Newburyport.
For your refreshment, wine, beer and soft drinks will be served -- along with thematic hors d'oeurves from another exotic stop on Sheila Mullins' extraordinary Spice Trade Culinary Adventure. This month, we visit the port known as Tavern of the Seas, Cape Town, South Africa!
We proudly feature the great and distinctive beers of Harpoon Brewery, the official beer of the Custom House Maritime Museum!
